I was *imitating* a right-winger, specifically one who is basing his/her views on emotion but can't just come out and say it. Thus, the logic doesn't add up, like saying "in America you can pull yourself up by your bootstraps," but then complaining that if the government makes health care more accessible, they will not be able to pull themselves up.

Nice one, Trish. I teach a life skills course for refugees who are on their way to the US, and many of the women were stay-at-home mamas in their homeland. Some of them have university degrees, and hope to use their degrees to begin working outside the home. But others didn't go to university, and were pressured into the housewife role by some serious patriarchy bullshit in their homeland. I make a point of telling these women that if they are able to and want to, when they get to the US, the skills they learned while taking care of kids, meals, cleaning, and home improvement will all be marketable skills they can use for paid work in the US. My words are met with relief, warm smiles, and also, especially from the men in the class, skepticism. So you keep telling 'em, and I'll keep telling 'em too.

Boo to condescending sexists.

Poor birds! We had a baby bluejay on our lawn last year, who had probably tried to fly too soon and failed. We made a makeshift nest under a shelter, and watched over the course of the day and were excited when he settled into it. The parent bluejays came down from the tree nest frequently over the next two days to feed the baby. Really cool for the girls to watch this so closely. Then, the baby was suddenly gone...our hope is that he finally got those wings to work properly!

I was looking for a feminist interpretation/translation of the 23rd psalm, and your page came up. I read the post dated the first of March, and thought it was recent. I came to leave a comment, and see that your post was from 2006. I'll leave my comment anyway, long after the fact.

I love the letter, and I'm glad you called Dr. Laura on this topic. I have to say that my experience of the feminists you seem to be pointing to when you say "I call myself a feminist, but I'm not like the feminists of the 1960s. I don't hate men" doesn't match. I have yet to meet a woman, even including radical separatists, who hates "men" unless she is meaning the male supremacist system, in which all men have been raised. Then the issue is really hating the game, not the player. When Dr. Laura talks about feminists hating men, it always feels like a straw woman she's knocking down.
